Glass and ceramics is made from the same base components and although their surface look smooth, on the molecular level it is not! Instead, glass and ceramics has very complex topographic surfaces with lots of open pores and sharp edges. This "landscape" attracts a lot of dirt, oil and calcium deposits, which over time buillds from within the uneven glass/ceramic surface.
